SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY moved five points clear at the top of the FA Premiership with a 2-1 win over Leicester at Hillsborough. A stunning first half chip from teenager Ritchie Humphrey's and a clinical second half finish from £2.65 million summer signing Andy Booth enabled Wednesday to maintain their 100 per cent record.
Their fourth successive win leaves them five points clear of nearest Premiership rivals Chelsea.
Leicester battled hard throughout and frustrated Wednesday for long spells, but Steve Claridge's first Premiership goal was not enough to prevent them sliding to a second successive defeat.
Humphreys, who had been dropped back into midfield to accommodate the return of David Hirst and replace the absent Mark Pembridge, sparked life into what had hitherto been a tame affair with a touch of magic on 25 minutes. From inside his own half, Wednesday's exciting 19 year old ran at Leicester skipper Steve Walsh and, from 20 yards, executed the perfect chip over a bemused Kasey Keller.
Within three minutes Leicester were level, Claridge swivelling on the edge of the Wednesday area and thumping a left foot shot into the top corner. Back on level terms, Leicester began to dominate possession and Kevin Pressman had to dive low to stop Mike Whitlow's well struck 25 yard free kick.
Wednesday might have regained their lead on the stroke of half time when Guy Whittingham's right wing cross found Booth unmarked at the near post, but his volley flew straight into Keller's arms.
Booth made amends five minutes into the second half when he latched onto a long ball, held off Spencer Prior, and steered his shot wide of the advancing Keller to make it 2-1.
