Hurling Semi-Finals

Leinster v Munster, Nowlan Park, Tomorrow, 2pm

Another fascinating duel between teams that feature many of the best hurlers in the country.

It’s fairly difficult to call a winner as it is difficult to know how much work has gone in behind the scenes. But that shouldn’t dim the spectacle to follow.

Connacht v Ulster, Duggan Park, Ballinasloe, Tomorrow, 2pm

A largely Galway-based Connacht side, yet to be released, shouldn’t have too many problems with the best of Ulster even if manager Anthony Cunningham’s primary focus is today’s All-Ireland football club semi-final (he is currently quadruple-jobbing as Garrycastle manager along with the Galway seniors, under-21s and the province).

CONNACHT: TBC.

M Donnelly Interprovincial Football Semi-finals

Leinster v Munster, Parnell Park, Tomorrow, 2pm

Player availability is slightly curbed by Jack O’Connor’s training schedule down in Kerry yet that hasn’t stopped Tomás Ó Sé, nor Brendan Kealy, Aidan O’Mahony and Seamus Scanlon making themselves available to manager Ger O’Sullivan, with Ó Sé named in the captain’s role.

For Leinster, 10 Dublin players are joined by the best of the rest like Wicklow’s Leighton Glynn and Carlow’s Brendan Murphy. Kildare, despite tonight’s O’Byrne Cup final, even handed over Emmett Bolton, Michael Conway and Johnny Doyle.

Leinster are stronger for the lack of Kerry figureheads on the Munster list.

LEINSTER: S Cluxton (Dublin), G Connaughton (Westmeath), R O’Carroll (Dublin), K Reilly (Meath), G Brennan (Dublin), K Nolan (Dublin), K Lillis (Laois), E Bolton (Kildare), C Healy (Laois), S McAnarney (Meath), G Molloy (Wexford), MD Macauley (Dublin), P Keenan (Louth), B Quigley (Laois), B Murphy (Carlow), A Brogan (Dublin), B Brogan (Dublin), L Glynn (Wicklow), K McManamon (Dublin), S McCormack (Longford), M Conway (Kildare), J Sheridan (Meath), B Cullen (Dublin), J Doyle (Kildare), D Connolly (Dublin).

Connacht v Ulster, Markievicz Park, Tomorrow, 2pm

At least Connacht manager Fergal O’Donnell named a side. There are representatives from all five counties with Wayne McKeon the only Leitrim man to start while Roscommon’s Donie Shine and Mayo’s Alan Dillon operating in the same half-forward line is a mouth-watering prospect.

Still, if Ulster get their combinations correct, and one imagines Joe Kernan will do just that, then Owen Mulligan and Benny Coulter, for example, may well strike up a pretty unstoppable duo close to goal. Ulster to win in Sligo.

ULSTER (squad): B McVeigh (Down), D Gordan (Down), B Coulter (Down), M Poland (Down), N McGee (Donegal), K Lacey (Donegal), R Kavanagh (Donegal), B Donaghy (Armagh), C McKeever (Armagh), P Harte (Tyrone), J McMahon (Tyrone), M Penrose (Tyrone), O Mulligan (Tyrone), J Devine (Tyrone), M Donnelly (Tyrone), C McCarron (Tyrone), T McCann (Antrim), J Loughrey (Antrim), V Corey (Monaghan), O Lennon (Monaghan), K Hughes (Monaghan), D Hughes (Monaghan), R Flanagan (Cavan), C Gilligan (Derry).

CONNACHT: G Claffey (Roscommon); S McDermott (Roscommon), F Hanley (Galway), C Harrison (Sligo); G Bradshaw (Galway), D Vaughan (Mayo), W McKeon (Leitrim); M Finneran (Roscommon), S O’Shea (Mayo); K McLaughlin (Mayo), D Shine (Roscommon), A Dillon (Mayo); C Mortimer (Mayo), A Marren (Sligo), N Joyce (Galway). AIB All-Ireland club SFC semi-finals Crossmaglen Rangers (Armagh) v Dr Crokes (Kerry), Today, Portlaoise, 2pm, live TG4. Extra-time if necessary

What would already have been an eagerly anticipated encounter acquired added piquancy in the fall-out from the junior club semi-final at this venue between Derrytresk and Dromid but there’s more than enough at stake here without extraneous considerations.

Crossmaglen are of course experts at this transition having turned nine Ulster titles into six All-Ireland final appearances with the possibility of a seventh on the table this afternoon. Crokes have Colm Cooper and Kieran O’Leary from Kerry’s All-Ireland attack but Cooper has a tendency to drift in club matches, which underplays his lethal scoring menace.

None the less if the Killarney club can get any share of ball at centrefield and feed their forwards, a surprise will be on the cards. Otherwise Cross just look too complete: patient and panic-resistant in defence, industrious around the middle and with their own stars up front in the veteran Oisín McConville and Jamie Clarke.

St Brigid’s (Roscommon) v Garrycastle (Westmeath), Pearse Park, Longford, 2pm, deferred TG4

As of last night the stand tickets had sold out for this intriguing cross-Shannon derby match. Like Crossmaglen, Brigid’s, who lost last year’s final are practised at bridging the gap between provincial and national championships.

There are injury concerns about Karol Mannion and full-back and captain Darragh Donnelly but overall the Roscommon club look to be on course to qualify for a second successive final.

Des Dolan obviously poses a major threat for the Westmeath champions to his cousins in Kiltoom but Brigid’s should still progress to the St Patrick’s Day decider.
