A loom at the weekend's matches in the English Premiership
Everton v Newcastle
Everton have lost Darron Gibson with a thigh strain, and have a tough task in halting a potent Newcastle attack; Hatem Ben Arfa will be looking to recreate his wonder strike against Aston Villa a fortnight ago. Perhaps the most glaring omission for the visitors is that of Tim Krul with an elbow injury.
Odds Everton 4-5 Newcastle 10-3 Draw 12-5
Manchester U v Wigan
Alex Ferguson has Phil Jones and Chris Smalling out with long-term injuries while Wayne Rooney is at least fortnight away from a return. Fortunately Robin Van Persie and Shinji Kagawa have recovered from knocks suffered on international duty and should be fit to play.
Odds Man Utd 2-7 Wigan 14-1 Draw 5-1
Aston Villa v Swansea
Paul Lambert must decide whether to field any of his four new signings and he also has the option of bringing Gabriel Agbonlahor into the starting line-up. Swansea are forced to reshuffle at the back – Neil Taylor is out for the remainder of the season while Chico Flores starts a three-match ban.
Odds Aston Villa 7-5 Swansea 12-5 Draw 7-3
Norwich v West Ham
Russell Martin should be available for Norwich after an ankle injury City while West Ham’s physical threat will be somewhat lessened by the absence of the on-loan Liverpool striker Andy Carroll with a hamstring injury. Yossi Benayoun could make his second debut after joining from Chelsea.
Odds Norwich 7-5 West Ham 11-5 Draw 5-2
Arsenal v Southampton
Abou Diaby’s injury jinx continues as the France international picked up an injury midweek. Keeping a handle on Santi Cazorla is key for the visitors, whose lively play so far has been impressive. The four goals scored by the Saints against the Manchester teams are not to be sniffed at.
Odds Arsenal 4-11 Southampton 9-1 Draw 4-1
Fulham v WBA
Fulham striker Bryan Ruiz is rated 50/50 but new signing Kieran Richardson joins Mahamadou Diarra, Kerim Frei and Philippe Senderos on the sidelines. Ashkan Dejagah is not yet match fit but Greek midfielder Giorgos Karagounis is available. Steven Reid is West Brom’s major injury concern.
Odds Fulham 10-11 West Brom 3-1 Draw 5-2
Sunderland v Liverpool
Adam Johnson is a doubt with a thigh injury while on-loan full-back Danny Rose could make his debut and midfielder David Vaughan may figure in what is Sunderland’s first home game of the season, thanks to problems with pitch drainage. For Liverpool, Jose Enrique’s knee injury will be assessed while Joe Allen has recovered from illness.
Odds Sunderland 11-5 Liverpool 6-5 Draw 9-4
QPR v Chelsea
Anton Ferdinand should be available after recovering from a shoulder injury while Samba Diakite is still unavailable for personal reasons. John Terry and Ashley Cole are set to be fit as both have trained in recent days while Roberto Di Matteo must decide whether to continue to rest Juan Mata.
Odds QPR 15-4 Chelsea 7-8 Draw 13-5
Stoke C v Manchester C
Michael Owen has declared himself fit to make his debut for Stoke City. Tony Pulis may give a debut to Steven Nzonzi and Charlie Adam is in line for his first start. City, too, have new players available, in the form of Maicon, Matija Nastasic, Javi García and Scott Sinclair. They could also have Sergio Aguero available again after his knee injury.
Odds Stoke 9-2 Man City 3-4 Draw 13-5D
Reading v Tottenham
Royals winger Jimmy Kebe is available after missing the start of the season with a hamstring injury while Adam Federici has proved his fitness. Goalkeeper Brad Friedel will keep his place in the Spurs team despite the recent signing of Hugo Lloris. Clint Dempsey could make his debut.
Odds Reading 11-4 Tottenham 11-10 Draw 8-3
