RACING/Curragh preview: Vinnie Roe is set to join his stable companion Media Puzzle in another assault on the Melbourne Cup next month, but Dermot Weld hasn't ruled out a late defection from the race if the ground is unsuitable for the four-time Irish St Leger winner.

The Curragh trainer sent the same horses to Flemington in 2002, where Media Puzzle came out on top with Vinnie Roe in fourth. The going that day was fast and a repeat of those conditions would not suit Vinnie Roe.

"They are both in quarantine at the moment and the plan is that both will travel. Once we are out there we will make a decision about Vinnie Roe.

"It depends on the ground. If it is like it was two years ago he will not run," Weld said yesterday.

A decision about whether the Irish Derby winner Grey Swallow will run again this season after his Arc disappointment has yet to be made, but Weld's focus tomorrow will be on the Juddmonte Beresford Stakes, where he runs the Thurles maiden winner Merger.

Just five line up for the prestigious Group Two, with Sant Jordi from Britain and a pair of runners from Ballydoyle, including the course runner-up Albert Hall.

But it's hard to ignore the partnership of Indesatchel and John Murtagh, who won the Beresford in 2002 and 2003 with the subsequent Group One performers Alamshar and Azamour.

David Wachman's colt won his maiden over seven furlongs here, but has been campaigned extensively over six furlongs since, including running the subsequent Middle Park winner Ad Valorem to a length here on his last start.

That race only seemed to confirm the impression that Indesatchel is crying out for a longer trip, and now that he gets it a valuable Group Two pot looks his for the taking.

Murtagh can make his trip home also count on the Roger Charlton-trained Striking Ambition in the Listed Testimonial Stakes.

The ex-Giles Bravery-trained horse twice beat the very decent Avonbridge last season and showed a glimpse of that kind of form on his first start for Charlton when third to Star Valley in a Group Three at Deauville in August.

Lock And Key was a slightly unlucky second to the impressive Cherokee over the course and distance on her last start, but can go one better in the Flame Of Tara Stakes.

Her jockey, Catherine Gannon, won the Cesarewitch for John Oxx on Zimbabwe last year and Gannon's 3lb claim could be vital to Maralan doing the same tomorrow.

Maralan is 8lb higher for winning at Listowel last time but remains 5lb out of the handicap proper.

Gannon is worth every ounce of her 3lb and more, and Maralan looks the type of progressive three-year-old that can get the better of a star jumping name like Solerina.

Aidan O'Brien runs four in the Listed Finale Stakes, and Two Miles West's 110 rating makes him a clear choice over the Galtres winner Tarakala.
