Welsh surprise

His team's surprise victory over Denmark could not have come at a better time for under-fire Wales manager Bobby Gould.

His team's surprise victory over Denmark could not have come at a better time for under-fire Wales manager Bobby Gould.

Gould had been told by all the critics that he had just two matches to save his job, the tough away game against Denmark and Wednesday's match in Cardiff against Belarus. In Copenhagen, though, Gould not only achieved the finest performance of his three years as a much-maligned manager of Wales but also one of the most famous Welsh victories in history.

The 2-1 victory over Denmark, World Cup quarter-finalists a few months back and in the top 15 in the world, lifted the pressure from Gould's shoulders - and how he knew it. Welsh fans had been chanting "Bobby Out" as the miracle performance unfolded, but they ended dancing crazy jigs almost in sheer disbelief at the end.

Wales have to follow the win with another against Belarus, which will put them firmly in second place in Group One.
