Wales' bid to successfully defend their World Cup title suffered an early blow in the second round in Barbados.

One shot off the lead going into today's foursomes after an opening 65, Bradley Dredge and Stephen Dodd bogeyed the opening hole at Sandy Lane to drop back to five under par.

Dredge pulled his opening drive into the spongy rough to the left of the fairway from where Dodd was unable to reach the green and last year's shock winners were unable to salvage par.

Worse was to come on the second, with a double bogey six dropping them back to three under and suddenly five shots off the pace set by Sweden, Henrik Stenson and Carl Pettersson having combined to birdie the first.

At eight under par the Swedish pair were one shot ahead of overnight joint leaders South Africa and Argentina, with Germany a shot further back on six under.

Pre-tournament favourites England were three off the pace on five under, Luke Donald and David Howell opening with two pars.

Playing together, Ireland and Scotland were three under after both pairs started with three pars before bogeys on the fourth.

Trinidad and Tobago had earlier made a stunning start to their round with eagles at the first and third, each time Robert Ames holing his approach after his brother Stephen's tee-shot.

However, bogeys at the sixth and seventh halted their charge and left them on two under par, six off the lead.

Birdies on the third and fourth repaired most of the early damage for Wales, but at five under par they were still four off the lead, Sweden having also birdied the third.

Scotland's Colin Montgomerie and Marc Warren had recovered superbly from the bogey on the fourth with three birdies in the next four holes lifting them to six under, one ahead of England who had carded one birdie and one bogey in six holes.  PA
