Westmeath said goodbye to their Leinster minor football championship title in Tullamore on Saturday when they were decisively defeated 3-6 to 1-7 by Offaly.

The holders had eight of their title-winning panel on duty, but they never recovered from their opponents' flying start which saw them lead by 1-4 to 0-0 before Denis Galvin opened Westmeath's account with a 15th-minute point.

Offaly scored a goal by Thomas Deehan as early as the third minute. Against the wind on the change of ends Offaly's only score was a third goal by Michael Hoey, but although Westmeath enjoyed a lot of possession most of it was wasted by poor finishing. Having scored three early points, they failed to score until Donal O'Donoghue's last-minute goal.
