News round-up/ MUNSTER SFC: Kerry warmed up for their Munster football semi-final against Limerick at the Gaelic Grounds next Sunday by defeating Wexford by 5-21 to 1-13 in a friendly game at the Fitzgerald Stadium Killarney yesterday.

Kerry had to field without Colm Cooper, who has a slight thigh strain, but is expected to be fit for the Limerick clash though he was not introduced despite Kerry using 24 players.

Séamus Moynihan, who had to cry off on the eve of Kerry's opener against Tipperary because of a calf strain, started at centre back and played a starring role as Kerry proved far too strong for Wexford.

Matty Forde scored 1-7 of his side's total while Declan Quill was Kerry's top scorer with seven points. Dara Ó Cinnéide notched 1-4 after coming off the bench.

Meanwhile, midfielder Jason Stokes is set to make his competitive comeback for Limerick against Kerry next Sunday. Stokes was out of action for nine months because of a knee injury and there were fears last month that he might not play again this year. However, he was given the all-clear to play in a challenge against Kildare last week and came through without suffering any ill-effects.

Definitely out of contention for a place is Eoin Keating, who damaged a shoulder while assisting his club Monaleen in a championship game.

Goalkeeper Séamus O'Donnell will also be having his first competitive match since last year, having been troubled by a leg injury.

MUNSTER JFC: Cork had to withstand a late Clare rally in the Munster junior semi-final at Cusack Park yesterday. Spurred on by an early Daniel Goulding goal the Cork men went on to win by 1-10 to 0-12.

SCORERS: Cork: P Dunlea (0-5, three frees), D Goulding (1-1), G Spillane (0-1), V Hurley (0-1), J Russell (0-1), N O'Riordan (0-1). Clare: P McMahon (0-9, four frees), D Lynch (0-2), B Curtin (0-1).

CHRISTY RING CUP: Westmeath started their campaign with a 4-19 to 0-11 victory over Roscommon at Cusack Park on Saturday. Their goals were scored by Joe Clarke, Andrew Mitchell, Barry Kennedy and Derek McNicholas.

In the same competition, Down held out against Derry in Lavey to win by 3-17 to 3-14 despite Derry full forward Geoffrey McGonigle netting twice in the second half.
