GAELIC GAMES/Wexford 0-13 Westmeath 1-7:WEXFORD MADE the long journey to Cusack Park, Mullingar, and came away with full points after a workmanlike performance against a poor home side yesterday.

They led 0-8 to 0-3 at the break and got the first two scores of the second half as Westmeath put up pretty tame resistance. Ciarán Lyng top-scored with six points and early in that second half it looked like damage limitation for the home side but a raft of substitutions, especially some of their successful under-21 team, turned the tide somewhat and when Paul Sharry pulled a ball across the square for Paul Greville to finish to the net there were just two points between the sides with 15 minutes still to play.

That was as good as it got though for Westmeath and a resolute Wexford defence, led brilliantly by Conor Cooney, was more than able to finish out the game as Westmeath wasted ball after ball.

Wexford’s Rory Quinlivan and Daithí Waters dominated the midfield and Lyng, Ben Brosnan and Redmond Barry led the Westmeath defence a merry dance.
