Rumours that Manchester United have offered a large blank cheque to Alex Stepney in an attempt to lure him out of retirement have yet to appear in the tabloids, but give it time. They have, though, according to the Sunday Mirror, lined up an £8 million bid for Real Madrid midfielder Jose-Maria Gutierrez (known as `Guti' to his friends) but will be on the receiving end of yet another bid from George Graham to bring Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to Spurs. Sol Campbell, we are told, will have to be part of the deal if Spurs are to get their man.

The Star, meanwhile, claims that David O'Leary has offered Chelsea precisely half the £10 million they paid Blackburn for Chris Sutton during the summer in an attempt to make him the cut-price replacement for Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink at Elland Road while just about every paper reported that Croatian midfielder Jurica Vranjes was on the verge of a £6.5m move to Arsenal - Arsene Wenger denied all knowledge of the deal so it must be true.

Danny Wilson, whether he knows it or not, is about to make a serious bid to bring Celtic midfielder Craig Burley and Rangers centre-half Colin Hendry to Sheffield Wednesday and the Sunday People tells us that Chris Evans and Terry Venables are lining up a "sensational £50 million bid" to buy Everton.

The People scooped the award for the week's `really really big football story', when they revealed that Chelsea's Tore Andre Flo drives home from Stamford Bridge most nights leaving his fiancee Randi Svedal standing outside the ground because he's forgotten all about her. She's not happy, by all accounts, and we don't blame her? Randi? It's time to stick Tore on the transfer list.
