Club career: Spent 15 years as a player with Tottenham, where he began as a schoolboy before signing professional terms in May 1977. Made his first team debut in 1979 and went on to make 406 appearances for the club, winning two FA Cup winners' medals in 1981 and 1982 and a UEFA Cup winners' medal in 1984. He was transferred to West Ham United in December 1990, following a loan spell at Upton Park, before moving to Brentford in February 1992 where he was forced to retire from playing in April 1993.

International career: Made his debut in October 1979 against the USA at Dalymount Park. Went on to win another 52 caps and was awarded a testimonial in May 1995.

Highlight: His only goal, in 53 international appearances, came in a World Cup qualifier against Cyprus at Lansdowne Road in November 1990. The Republic were already 5-0 up when, in the 65th minute, Liam Brady's header fell to Hughton on the left . . . he skipped past four tackles before firing home with his right foot. He retired from goalscoring after that.

Where is he now? Returned to White Hart Lane in 1993 to take over as manager of the newly formed under-21 side and was later appointed Tottenham reserve team coach.
