Club career: Began his English league career with Coventry City in 1971, before moving to Tottenham six years later. Had spells with Leicester, Brentford, Torquay, Peterborough and Vancouver Whitecaps, with whom he was playing when he won his final Irish cap in 1981. Had a short spell playing with non-league Nuneaton before briefly managing Hitchin Town and Bedworth.

International career: Won 30 senior caps between 1971 and 1981, scoring once, from a penalty in a friendly against Norway in 1976.

Highlight: Became the youngest player - 17 years six months and 19 days - to win a senior Irish cap when he came on as a sub for Don Givens in the 1971 European Championship qualifier against Austria at Dalymount Park.

Where is he now? Holmes is an officer with the West Midlands police force, which he joined after ending his managerial career in non-league football.
