No 9: Ashley Grimes

Club career: After an unsuccessful trial with Manchester United in August 1972 (when he was 15), Grimes finally joined the club five years later when Tommy Docherty signed him from Bohemians for £20,000. Made 108 appearances for the club over the next six seasons before being transferred to Coventry City (in August 1983). A year later he moved on to Luton Town and in 1990 he joined Spanish club Osasuna, before returning to England to coach the reserve and youth teams under Lou Macari, his former United team-mate, at Stoke City. Remained at the club until last season when Chris Kamara was appointed manager.

International career: Won 18 caps between 1978 and 1988, making his debut in a 4-2 win against Turkey at Lansdowne Road. Scored his only international goal against Spain, in a 1982 European Championship qualifier. Highlight: After suffering the misery of missing out on a place in United's 1983 FA Cup final team after he had played brilliantly in the semi-final win over Arsenal, Grimes made it to Wembley with Luton five years later, in the 1988 League Cup final. Came on as a sub and it was his cross from the right that set up Brian Stein's winning goal in a 3-2 victory over Arsenal. Returned to Wembley a year later with Luton in the same competition, but they lost 3-1 to Nottingham Forest.

Where is he now? Has been out of football since leaving Stoke City but is now doing a media studies course in Bolton, as well as working with local radio as a football analyst.
