Club career: The Paisley-born striker began his career with Morton, before having brief spells at Airdrie and Queen of the South. In the 1984-85 season he scored 31 goals for Albion Rovers and caught the attention of Middlesbrough, who signed him for £25,000. Played in over 300 games for the club, scoring 147 goals before moving to Port Vale in 1993, his final club.
International career: A Donegal grandfather made him eligible to become the 40th player capped by Jack Charlton in 1990, when he scored on his debut in a World Cup warm up game against Wales at Lansdowne Road (following up after Kevin Sheedy's penalty had been saved by Neville Southall). Made it into the final 22 chosen for Italia '90 but didn't get a game and his short international career ended three years later when he won his seventh cap as a sub against Wales at Tolka Park.
Where is he now? Slaven, now 38, returned to the North East after his playing career ended. He is a co-commentator for Middlesbrough's Century Radio and a co-host on a football magazine show on Boro TV (a local cable channel), securing the job after his predecessor Malcolm Allison was sacked for using one expletive too many. Was one of Middlesbrough's most popular players and remains something of a cult hero on Teeside.
