Club career: The father of goalkeepers Alan Jnr (Sheffield United) and Gary (Oldham) started his career with Drumcondra in 1954 before moving to Preston North End, where he stayed for the rest of his career. Played in the 1964 FA Cup Final, which Preston lost 4-2 to West Ham. He retired with a shoulder injury in 1973, when he was 37.

International career: Won 47 caps between 1956 and 1973, making his debut in the 3-0 win over reigning world champions West Germany at Dalymount Park (November 25, 1956).

Where is he now? Had a spell as Irish coach and assistant manager after he finished his playing career and also worked as a goalkeeping coach with Preston and Everton. Moved to America in 1985 where he coached goalkeepers in Washington and opened one of the first indoor playing facilities in the city. In 1993 he founded the "Alan Kelly Soccer Programmes", which offer year-round training for players of all levels, and four years later he was appointed goalkeeper coach at DC United, the 1996 and 1997 American League Champions.
