GOLF: American Mark Wilson survived a few anxious moments in gusting winds over the closing stretch to claim his second PGA Tour title by two shots at the Mayakoba Classic.
Co-leader overnight, Wilson bogeyed 15 and 16 before parring the last two holes for a two-under 68 on the El Camaleon course at the resort of Playa del Carmen on the Riviera Maya.
The 34-year-old was especially delighted to par the 18th, hitting a three-wood approach on to the green and two-putting for a 13-under total of 267.
"Once I hit the three-wood, it was just pure joy," Wilson said after finishing two strokes ahead of fellow American JJ Henry (68).
"You're so nervous and you somehow pull off one of the best shots I hit all week. That three-wood felt so good to get to the back of the green.
"Just pure joy and satisfaction that the hard work went in and that you didn't get overwhelmed by the situation."
Wilson, who held the third-round lead with compatriot Bo Van Pelt, birdied two of the first three holes to break clear in the final round.
He picked up a further shot at the par-four ninth to reach the turn in three-under 32 before the skies darkened and the winds strengthened.
After registering another birdie at the par-four 12th, he stumbled toward the finish but had enough of a cushion to add a second Tour title to his maiden victory at the 2007 Honda Classic.
"The skies were pretty dark and I'm kind of happy we got it in," he said after celebrating his win with an abbreviated fist pump and doffing his cap to acknowledge the applause from the fans.
