Bjorkman makes his final bow

SWEDE JONAS Bjorkman made his last appearance in the singles event at the All England Lawn Tennis Club this week when he went down to Frenchman Arnaud Clement. The 2006 semi-finalist was making a remarkable 15th consecutive performance at SW19.

Bjorkman (36) had revealed it would be his final appearance at Wimbledon as he winds down to his retirement.

THE FIRE Brigade were happy to help out an old legend this week and it was all hands to the pump when former England striker Teddy Sheringham dropped his mobile phone down the back of the temporary stand at Court 18, while watching British player Melanie South.

Sheringham got his phone, while South headed, well, south.

Djokovic puts his two feet in it

THE OFFICIAL clothing sponsor of Novak Djokovic must be cringing in their crib. Djokovic found that he was slipping on the grass at the Queen's Club wearing his Adidas tennis shoes and promptly replaced them with a pair of another brand, who do not sponsor him.

There must be a designer somewhere thanking his lucky stars that Djokovic went out yesterday to Marat Safin as Adidas may have had to watch the biggest marketing opportunity of the year with one of their top names wearing the shoes of a competitor.

Ironically Safin was all decked out in Adidas.

Ivanovic reads the game right

WHATEVER WAS going on in the head of Ana Ivanovic yesterday? Her head and forehand seemed all over the place.

Not surprisingly the young Serb, who is reading Snow by Orhan Pamuk and has also delved into the writings of Freud, had thought seriously about studying psychology. Instead she chose finance.

She may have lost her mind against Nathalie Dechy on Court One but she'll keep her money.

Jankovic takes things easy

THE 23-YEAR-OLD second-seed Jelena Jankovic is taking things at a much more sedate pace this year.

The Serbian player, who advanced to the second round on Tuesday, took a break from tennis for two weeks before coming to Wimbledon because of heath issues.

Her approach is in stark contrast to last year when she arrived as the first player since Chris Evert to have won 50 matches prior to the start of Wimbledon 2007.
