CLIVE BRITTAIN'S Luso made a winning comeback at Newmarket yesterday and he is banking on an invitation to the Middle East next March for the Dubai World Cup for Luso, who gave weight all round in the Group Three Earl of Sefton Stakes.
The Newmarket trainer declared "The doors are open now. We've got plenty of options. He's in the Prix Ganay and the Coronation Cup and he'll probably get an invitation to the Dubai World Cup I never think small, do I?"
Luso, winner of the Italian Derby last year, hit the front inside the last two furlongs of the one mile one furlong contest, but was immediately headed by hot favourite Smart Alec. But under a terrific ride from Michael Kinane, the 14 to 1 shot fought his way back inside the final 150 yards for a head victory.
Runner up Smart Alec, regarded as a Guineas prospect last year, but sidelined through injury, delighted Luca Cumani on his first start in 550 days.
Pat Eddery is having a terrific Craven Meeting and he collected more cash in a race he didn't even win. Eddery finished fourth on Emerging Market in the Racing and Football Outlook Rated Stakes but still picked up £1,518 as he bred the winner Tarawa who, partnered by Richard Hughes, edged out Monaassib.
Peter Walwyn got off the mark for the season when Tawaaded sprang a 33 to 1 surprise when making all under Richard Hills in the Geoffrey Barling Maiden Stakes.
