Waterford IT 2-14 Cork IT 1-9: Cork IT's failure to take advantage of a gale in the first half of this keenly contested tie at Ballygunner yesterday cost them dearly. They eventually went down to an impressive Waterford IT side who were not flattered by their eight-point winning margin.
Facing into the wind in the first half, the home side took the game to the opposition, and were led by 0-4 to 0-3 before Michael Fennelly's 20th-minute goal put the Cork side into the lead for the first time.
Two points from frees inside his half by John Gardiner were not enough to build a decisive lead as two points from Rory Jacob kept WIT in touch. They trailedby 1-5 to 0-6 at half-time with wind advantage to come.
Early points from Eoin Reid and Brian Dowling levelled the game after four minutes of the second half, but Cork went back in front briefly through Cathal Naughton. Reid and Dowling again put WIT ahead before Rory Jacob's 49th-minute goal opened a five-point lead.
The game was sealed when Cathal Parlon got WIT's second goal in the 53rd minute.
