WOLFE TONES of Shannon just edged out a heroic Ballyheigue side in the opening round of the Munster SH championship played at a windswept Ballyheigue yesterday afternoon. They had to endure some extremely anxious moments, particularly during the course of the second half.
With the aid of the breeze, Wolfe Tones had built up a half time lead of 1-7 to 0-2. Their goal came just before break after corner forward Paul O'Rourke hit a harmless enough shot. Goalkeeper John Healy stumbled as he was about to save, with the ball ending up in the back of the net.
Ballyheigue had a dream start to the second half. A point from a sideline by Michael Slattery was followed by a goal from a long range free by Brendan O'Sullivan.
A point by Paul Keary stemmed the tide somewhat, but goalkeeper Healy drove a 45th minute penalty to the net to leave just a point between the sides. At this stage it was backs to the wall for the Clare men, but their defence stood firm, with the Lohan brothers, Frank and Brian, and centreback Sean Power outstanding.
Three points in a row for the visitors put further daylight between the teams. Ballyheigue responded again with three points. Paul O'Rourke of Wolfe Tones had the final say with a point.
