Tiger Woods shot a five-under-par 67 in Saturday's third round to stretch his lead at the Target World Challenge.
Woods, who is at 18-under 198, failed to break the tournament's 54-hole record by a stroke but holds a comfortable advantage, with a six stroke lead over Jim Furyk.
Furyk shot a 69 and is at 12-under while Zach Johnson is at 11-under after also carding a 69.
Woods began the day with a four-stroke advantage over Furyk at Sherwood Country Club and started strongly with birdies on his first two holes, building his lead to five shots.
The world number one made a bogey on the fourth hole and Furyk made birdie to cut the lead to three but Woods restored his four-shot cushion with another birdie on the sixth.
A missed par putt from four feet on the par-3 eighth hole dropped the lead to three as Woods settled for a two-under 34 at the turn.
Furyk shot a bogey-free 33 on the front nine, saving par on the ninth after hooking his tee shot. He was forced to lay up but nearly put his wedge shot into the cup before tapping in for a par
He birdied the 11th and 12th to move to 14 under but his challenge faltered after a double bogey at the par-three 15th.
Furyk's tee shot was short, hit some rocks fronting the green and his ball bounced into the water. He made a great third shot but his 12-foot putt to save bogey lipped out.
Meanwhile Woods made birdies on the 10th, 11th and 18th to increase his lead to six with one round to play.
"I didn't hit the golf ball quite as well as I did yesterday, but made some nice putts and up-and-downs," Woods said.
"It was a nice day to kind of get through it and actually increase the lead."
Woods has had a lead going into the final round of a tournament on 44 occasions and has walked off with the trophy 41 times.
Only Ed Fiori at the 1996 Quad City Classic, Phil Mickelson at the 2000 Tour Championship and Retief Goosen at the 2004 Tour Championship were able to wrestle away first place from Woods.
"Tiger has a way of kind of keeping the pedal down," Furyk said.
"He's strong willed and finds a way to get the ball in the hole when he's in trouble."
