Japan's Shigeki Maruyama withstood late challenges by rookie Ben Crane and World number one Tiger Woods, who both shot 65s, to win the $4.8 million Byron Nelson Classic in Texas yesterday.

Maruyama, who won the Greater Milwaukee Open last July, shot a final-round 68 to finish at 14-under-par 266 and win by two shots over Crane and four over Woods.

David Toms and South African Ernie Els finished at eight-under 272. Woods and Crane made charges with their low rounds of the day.

Maruyama earned $864,000 for his second win on the PGA Tour and moves up to $1,470,699 on the PGA Tour money list.

Meanwhile, Bruce Lietzke was declared the winner of the Waterhouse championship yesterday after the Senior PGA Tour event was reduced to 36 holes due to rain.

The final round never got under way and Lietzke was awarded top placing.

The runner-up to Bob Gilder for rookie of the year honours last season, Lietzke won his second title of 2002.

He also claimed the Audi Senior Classic, using a six-under-par 66 in the second round to move into contention before winning by one stroke.

After firing an eight-under-par 64 in rainy conditions Saturday, Lietzke was not counting on the weather to help yesterday.

"I've never won a tournament sitting in the clubhouse and Isuspect I never will," Lietzke predicted after Saturday's round.

Lietzke finished at 11-under 133, two shots in front of Larry Nelson. Walter Hall, Hale Irwin and Tom Wargo tied for third, four shots back.

"I really wish we would have played," Lietzke said. "I came here wanting to win, but not this way. I'm going away with some sad feelings.

"This was my first year here and it was special since I was born here." "it's a shame," Nelson added.
