Tiger Woods raced 12 points clear at the top of the world rankings issued today after winning the 88th US PGA Championship at Medinah, the 12th major victory of his career.

The 30-year-old American extended his lead over world number two Phil Mickelson after his five-stroke triumph in, Illinois last night.

It was Woods's second major win of the year after he also triumphed in last month's British Open at Hoylake.

Alejandro Canizares, 23, of Spain climbed to 238th in the rankings after winning the Russian Open, only his third European Tour event as a professional.
