Tavistock Cup:Tiger Woods fired an eight-under 64 to land the individual prize in the Tavistock Cup for the third successive year even though his side took an overall thumping in the annual match between members of Lake Nona and Isleworth in Florida.
Woods boosted his bank balance to the tune of £250,000 while Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell looked certain to finish runner-up but for a pair of of closing bogeys. The 27-year-old signed for a 67 and tied third alongside Mark O'Meara and Retief Goosen behind Woods and England's Justin Rose (67) in second.
Despite Woods' best efforts, his Isleworth team lost 22-8 in the two-day event to Ernie Els' Lake Nona team in Orlando.
Woods started slowly but a run of seven straight birdies from the eighth eased the world number one to the individual title. He said that his build up to next week's Masters will begin almost immediately back at the Isleworth Club.
"I'm just happy that I get to take a little break on Wednesday, take some time off, then start to grind a little bit later in the week," he said.
Rose, whose 66 was Lake Nona's best individual score, was glad to return to action after missing three events with a back injury.
"It's been a nightmare," said the Englishman after picking up a cheque for nearly £150,000. "The goal has been to get fit for Augusta next week and hopefully I'm there."
Isleworth had trailed 10-0 after the opening day whitewash in the pairings while the second day consisted of fourball singles matches. Each player in the five fourballs competed in strokeplay singles against his two opponents.
