England coach Clive Woodward yesterday explained some of his controversial selection decisions ahead of Saturday's Test against the All Blacks at Twickenham.

Woodward has given a first cap to 20-year-old Gloucester wing James Simpson-Daniel, and there is no place in the starting XV for experienced Leicester and Lions flanker Neil Back.

Back, who last sat on the bench five years ago - also against New Zealand - has missed out behind a back-row trio of Lewis Moody, Richard Hill and Dallaglio.

"It was a very big decision, but ever since Argentina in the summer, I have always been thinking about Lewis Moody starting this game," said Woodward.

"Moody came through strongly in Argentina, and deserves his chance. It is the first time in five years that I have left Backy out, and he is very disappointed, but he is in a very competitive position."

Woodward had words of comfort for Gloucester's Andrew Gomarsall, who was tipped in some quarters to pip Matt Dawson for the scrumhalf role, but has ended up missing out on a place in England's 22.

While Dawson starts, Austin Healey's ability to cover both half-back positions means that he wins a bench role above Gomarsall.

"It is very tough on Andy, but if Matt Dawson gets injured this week, then he will go straight into the team," added Woodward.

"Andy is ahead of Kyran Bracken, and is very close on the heels of Dawson, but with Austin fit and Charlie Hodgson and Mike Catt out of the equation, then it was a case of Austin covering nine and 10."

Simpson-Daniel will renew acquaintances with Jonah Lomu, and it should be an intriguing contest. Simpson-Daniel gave Lomu the run-around when England defeated a star-studded Barbarian side at Twickenham five months ago, but the Gloucester youngster is unlikely to enjoy such dominance this time around.

Woodward said: "James is a very talented football player. He has got an outstanding skill range, and we are not experimenting here - he is in on form.

"We are not influenced by the Barbarians game, because it was nothing like what James would experience on the weekend. I am sure than Jonah's mind-set will be different from the Barbarians game."
