The World Athletics Championships, which started in Seville yesterday, will set a new record with 203 countries participating in the event, the highest number to attend any sporting competition ever.

Seville beats Athens's record set in 1997 when 197 countries participated and also the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta when 197 nations also entered. Some 1,159 men and 785 women will compete for the medals this week.
