We couldn't but chuckle at Rodney Marsh's attack last week on the current wave of ill-discipline amongst players in the English game. "In the Seventies players knew if they raised their hands to a referee they would be sent off immediately. No question. Players used to respect referees and vice versa but that's not the case these days," he proclaimed. This was just after he recalled an incident from the Seventies, when he was playing for Manchester City, when he grabbed a referee by the throat and banged his head against a goalpost because he hadn't awarded City a penalty. Marsh wasn't even booked, never mind sent off. Pot, kettle, black?
