Social media platform Twitter suffered a problem on Monday after an internal change made links and other content inaccessible to users.

The company confirmed it had made an internal change that had “unintended consequences” after thousands of users complained links to external content were no longer working. Others said the problem extended to videos, photos and animated gifs.

“Some parts of Twitter may not be working as expected right now. We made an internal change that had some unintended consequences,” the Twitter Support account tweeted. “We’re working on this now and will share an update when it’s fixed.”

The issues began shortly after 4.30pm Irish time, with DownDetector noting a spike in reports of issues.

The Elon Musk owned platform has cut staff dramatically since the billionaire bought Twitter in a $44 billion deal. Since he assumed control of the social media network, Musk has introduced sweeping changes that include a subscription tier that allows users to buy blue badges once reserved for verified users, and compelling the remaining staff to work from Twitter offices, effectively cancelling the company’s flexible working policy.
