John Wilson: Two solid Italian wines for less than €9

Wines for the Weekend: Aldi has a good offer on Italians that work well with food, but are also good on their own

Two of a kind: Splendid Vino d’Italia coming your way.

Aldi has two wines on offer since August 22nd. Both are Vino d’Italia, a broad term covering the whole country rather than any specific region. The white bottle looks as if it was designed to contain perfume rather than wine, but this is very fashionable, a trend probably started by Provence Rosé producers. The red bottle is more traditional, with a crest embossed on the front.

From September 5th Aldi will switch to a different special offer on two more traditional wines, the Freeman’s Bay Marlborough sauvignon blanc for €7.49 (down from €8.49) and the Specially Selected Valpolicella Ripasso Superiore for €8.49 (down from €10.49).
