Funeral of woman who died climbing Mount Kilimanjaro to take place at weekend

The funeral of Majella Duffy who died while climbing Mount Kilimanjaro will take place on Saturday.

Ms Duffy (35) from Rathcormac, Co Cork, died last Friday while climbing the mountain in memory of her late father, who had died of a heart attack, and to raise money for the Irish Heart Foundation (IHF). The cause of her death is still unknown.

Ms Duffy will repose at her home on Friday from 3pm and her funeral will take place at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Rathcormac on Saturday at 1pm.

The family have asked for donations to the Irish Heart Foundation in lieu of flowers.

Ms Duffy worked at Laya Healthcare in Little Island, Cork and was well-known in the bodybuilding community in Ireland.

Local councillor Deirdre O’Brien described Ms Duffy as “a lovely girl” and “really genuine”.

“What you saw is what you got with Majella,” she said. “I used to work with her in Laya, I sat beside her. Majella never said ‘no’, she was always there to give a helping hand, she was always just very kind and good natured.”
