Sir, – Before he leaves the FAI, I want to invite John Delaney to one of my son’s home games.
His team plays U 12 Club Soccer on Saturdays in Bushy Park. There are only a few housekeeping rules for John Delaney to remember. If it rains during the week, the match will be cancelled because the drainage is very poor. So I’ll make sure to text him at the last minute just in case. A coffee afterwards would be lovely but there’s no clubhouse. Switching to an evening kick off isn’t an option as there aren’t any floodlights either. So just like my son’s team, he needs to hope it keeps dry and fine.
But it’s not all doom and gloom. We do our best to teach the boys about teamwork, resourcefulness, comradeship and respect for players and opposition. So I’m sure there will be much for John Delaney to hear at the pre-match team talk once the weather holds up. – Yours, etc,
