Sir, – The very idea that a compulsory purchase order may be used to acquire for demolition buildings that are older than the Abbey Theatre itself, in order to extend its “arena” is shocking.
I wonder what the National Theatre’s old ghosts are saying? Lady Gregory might well ask: “Who are these dull, myopic local townsfolk?” Her protégé John Millington Synge might respond: “Jobbing jockeys, parching peelers, and the juries fill their stomachs with (CPO) law.” And WB Yeats would no doubt state: “We have disgraced ourselves again.”
