Sir, – The DUP should be outraged that the victims’ families of the alleged actions of soldiers B and F have been denied the opportunity to seek justice for their loved ones.
On Friday, the North’s Public Prosecution Service (PPS) said it was dropping the case against a British army veteran known as Soldier F for two murders and five attempted murders on Bloody Sunday in Derry in January 1972. Another prosecution against Soldier B for the murder of 15-year-old Daniel Hegarty – shot twice in the head in Derry in July 1972 – and the wounding of his cousin Christopher was also being discontinued, the PPS said.
Had these killings been committed in any city in Britain, restitution would have been delivered long ago. The DUP should forget their campaign against the Northern Ireland protocol.
There is surely no greater demonstration that their place in the union has been diminished than this judgement that denies families access to truth and justice. – Yours, etc,
