Sir, – Maureen Dowd believes that Samuel Alito's draft US supreme court opinion "is the Puritans' greatest victory since they expelled Roger Williams from the Massachusetts Bay Colony" ("Marilyn Monroe v Samuel Alito – US still riven by contradictory strains of sexuality and priggishness", World, Opinion, "May 9th). I fear that she is misinformed. The 17th-century Puritans were Protestants; Mr Alito is a Catholic. The anti-Catholic Pilgrim Fathers would not have been pleased by her confusion. – Yours, etc,
