Sir, – With all the discussions on climate change and the reduction of our emissions, there has been a lot of talk about wind power.
However, I am wondering why there has been little or no mention lately of the provision of additional hydroelectric power.
In the area in which I live in south Dublin, during the early part of the last century there were at least 20 business using the river Dodder and its tributaries for power with the help of weirs and mill races. I am sure that there are many other examples throughout the country.
The provision of a major hydroelectric scheme may not be on the cards right now; however, surely there is scope for the provision of a series of micro-generators powered by our rivers and connected to the grid in the same way as a wind farm. – Yours, etc,
JIM O’NEILL,
Dublin 14.
