Sir, – I have just read in your newspaper, with horror, of the assault on a wife by her husband in which he tried to suffocate her, kicked and punched her and caused clumps of her hair to fall out ("Man who tried to suffocate his wife gets suspended sentence", News, September 11th) .
I was equally horrified to read the sentence imposed for this assault was 18 months, suspended, and the judge’s comment that the case was “very hard to understand”.
So is his sentencing! And If he doesn’t understand that, why is he a judge? Perhaps someone might explain it to him. – Yours, etc,
