Sir, – Malachy Clerkin refers to the safety of outdoor sport with respect to Covid transmission ("Benefits of sport far outweigh the Covid risks so why are kids still not playing?", Sport, Opinion, March 8th).
He rightly refers to the possibility of children drifting away from sport.
At present, quite large numbers of teenagers are regularly meeting together in unsupervised settings with no social distance being observed. Supervised and time-limited sessions can be organised with a very high coach to player ratio as more adult players are in a position to help while they wait their own return to play. Sports organisations have successfully operated pandemic protocols up to last December.
There should be no problem therefore in organising a return to children’s outdoor sports to coincide with the reopening of our schools. – Yours, etc,
