Two Spanish wines: A classic white that’s light in alcohol and a red to go with roasts

Wines for the Weekend: Verdejo can taste uncannily like sauvignon blanc, while Rioja Reserva is a favourite of Irish drinkers

This week, we have two Spanish wines from Tesco – a Rueda Verdejo and a Rioja Reserva.

The Rueda region produces almost exclusively white wines, usually made using the local verdejo grape or sauvignon blanc. Verdejo has been grown here for centuries. It can taste uncannily like sauvignon blanc at times, and is a very popular aperitif wine in Spain.

We are more familiar with Rioja Reserva in this country. The Tesco version is a classic with ripe fruits overlaid with vanilla spice, the result of being aged in oak barrels for an extended period.

Tesco Finest Organic Rueda Verdejo 2023

11% abv, €12

This wine is floral, light in alcohol with grapefruit and mango fruits. Crisp and refreshing, this would go very nicely with grilled white fish, or you could enjoy it as a Spanish aperitif with tapas.
