Sir, – Why was such a profoundly illegal deed as the illegal registration of births apologised for by a Minister and not the Taoiseach of Ireland?
Why was the apology assigned to the Seanad at 6.30pm of a Tuesday evening?
Surely the apology for this horrific injustice should have been a headline act?
Where next?
As proof that the apology is sincere, will the relevant files be released and those responsible for these terrible deeds held to account?
How do you compensate anyone for such an injustice?
Next there must be a State apology to all mothers who in times past were isolated, with all sorts of shaming and bullying methods used to procure children for adoption. Those files too in the interest of a just society must be released. – Yours, etc,
GERALDINE GREGAN,
Clare.
