English soccer teams and human rights

Sir, – For Irish supporters of English soccer there will, no doubt, have been interest in the outcome of a fixture between Chelsea and Newcastle who played each other on Sunday.

One team is owned by a Russian oligarch and the other is owned by Saudi Arabia where 81 men were executed in the past 24 hours, in the largest known mass execution carried out in this so-called kingdom in its modern history.

The removal of the merchandise of these English businesses from every shop in Ireland might be a minimalist gesture but it would at least say something. – Yours, etc,
