Sir, – The choice is really quite simple; we either pay very high salaries to a smaller number of medical consultants or more reasonable salaries to a larger number.
We have chosen the former. Locum pay is not an outlier. It is in line with consultant pay levels generally in Ireland which are out of line with pay levels in the rest of Europe.
According to the latest OECD data (for 2019), Ireland’s healthcare spend/capita is among the highest in Europe.
