Sir, – The Russian invasion of Ukraine has rightly prompted questions about the ownership of football clubs, particularly those in the English Premiership, by the super-wealthy, particularly Roman Abramovich’s control of Chelsea football club.
Can we now expect similar questions to be asked regarding the ownership of Newcastle United by the sovereign wealth fund of Saudi Arabia, and that state’s bombing of Yemen and, according to the United Nations, their responsibility for the vast majority of the 18,000 civilians killed and wounded since 2015? Or will we be dismissed with such weasel terms as a valued partner, a strategic ally and a loyal customer of the West and its weapons? – Yours, etc,
DAVID DOYLE,
Dublin 4.
