Sir, – In his letter of February 9th, Richard Bannister suggests that the National Car Test should be based on the distance that vehicles cover rather than on an annual basis. However, it is more important for cars that have not been driven to be inspected regularly as brakes, tyres, battery, oil, etc, can degrade over time. – Yours, etc,
CYRIL O’NEILL,
Edenderry,
Co Offaly.
Sir, – Richard Bannister (Letters, February 9th) makes the case that the NCT should switch from a blunt calendar metric to one based on distance travelled. He and others may be interested in my wife’s experience.
Yesterday she took her venerable 20-year-old Micra to the NCT testing centre where it had passed last August, that test having been postponed from the previous February.
This time it failed – only six months later and with an extra 257 miles on the clock. – Yours, etc,
LOUIS O’FLAHERTY,
Santry,
