Teachers and mindfulness

Sir, – I read with rising incredulity that teachers are to be trained in mindfulness aimed at building students' resilience ("Teachers to be trained in mindfulness to boost wellbeing of their students", October 9th). I must implore the Minister for Education that enough is enough. Teachers are not mindfulness gurus, social workers or psychologists, and while the vast majority care greatly about their students, I argue most want to get on with their job, which is to teach. Teachers should not be expected to cure all society's ills, and a young person's resilience and wellbeing are more properly suited to being dealt with in the home. Teachers can only do such with the time and resources available. Meanwhile, I await the full restoration of guidance hours at post-primary level. – Yours, etc,
