Sir, – Following the breakthrough to Phase 2 in the Brexit negotiations, I wonder what has happened to the UK negotiating stance of “have your cake and eat it”. It would seem that the cake was half-baked and therefore inedible. – Yours, etc,
MALACHY THOMPSON,
Renmore,

Sir, – The Phase 1 agreement may well be a good deal for those politicians and practitioners who negotiated it but the real deal has yet to be done, for people, goods and services, for jobs and livelihoods across Europe, including the UK. The devil is most certainly in the detail. – Yours, etc,
DÓNAL DENHAM,
Dalkey, Co Dublin.
Sir, – I cannot see how Theresa May can sell to hardline Brexiteers what will appear to them to be capitulations. True, these concessions are part and parcel of a reasonable negotiating process. But with Brexit, reason is only a small part of the story. – Yours, etc,
MARY BYRNE,
Bray,
Co Wicklow.
